Could work :) The way I see it, all scouts are connected to one another, when one of them get shot down (they are very fragile). All others will know when and where and alarm the fighter drones to give the player a proper beatdown... :)
The hacking idea could be a cool feature, we have to make it worthwhile though, a simple map probably isn't going to cut it as most of the levels will not be that big anyway. Patrol paths and/or hostile drone locations would add a great deal of value. (just like you, brainstorming here :) )
Those drones look exactly like what I had in mind for possible (non-combat) scouts.
